Autism Spectrum Disorder Explained - What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder characterised by:

A marked impairment in communication and social interaction :

  1. Delay or lack in the use and understanding expressive language.
  2. Limited receptive understanding of language Impaired ability to initiate or sustain a conversation.
  3. Stereotyped and repetitive use of language or idiosyncratic language.
  4. Lack of spontaneous interaction.
  5. Lack of motivation and interest in sharing experiences with others.
  6. Lack of social understanding.
  7. Lack of emotional understanding Lack of varied and spontaneous play: Pretend play/ social play/ Joining play/ Initiating play.
  8. Failure to develop peer relationships appropriate to developmental level.

The presence of repetitive, challenging and self stimulation behaviours :

  1. Stereotyped and restricted patterns of interest.
  2. Behaviours or activities that are abnormal in intensity or focus.
  3. Inflexibility to change.
  4. Difficulty transitioning.
  5. Adherence to specific, non-functional routines or rituals.
  6. Repetitive and stereotyped motor actions.
  7. Preoccupation with parts of objects.
  8. Short attention span.
  9. Poor motivation to learn and interact.
  10. Seek out or avoid certain sensory input.
